Tuscany

DOC for dry red and rosé wines in the Maremma region in southern Tuscany in Italy. The zone includes parts of the communes of Manciano, Sorano (with the suburb of Sovana, from which the name is taken) and Pitigliano in the province of Grosseto. The varietal-labelled wines Aleatico Superiore, Merlot Superiore, Sangiovese Superiore and Sangiovese Superiore must contain a minimum of 85% of the stated variety, the remainder may be made up of other permitted red varieties. If matured for two years in oak barrels, plus another 6 months in bottle, all four wines may be called Riserva. Rosso, Rosso Superiore and Rosato are made from Sangiovese (50-100%) as well as from other red varieties (up to 50%).
