Lombardy

DOC for white wine located on the border of the wine-growing regions of Lombardy and Veneto in Italy, at the southern tip of Lake Garda. The region is named after a battlefield, on which the Piemontese defeated the Austrians in 1859. The zone includes the communes of Desenzano, Lonato, Sirmione and Pozzolengo in the province of Brescia (Lombardy), as well as Peschiera in the province of Verona (Veneto). The region was formerly known as “Tocai di San Martino della Battaglia”, this had to be changed after Hungary claimed the name could be confused with that of Tokay in Hungary, and this was supported by a decision of the EU, which forced the removal of the words „Tocai di“. The wine has a deep yellow colour and is dry, the bouquet is of lemons and almonds, and it is made from a minimum of 80% of Tocai Friulano, and optionally from other permitted white varieties (up to 20%). There is also a fortified sweet Liquoroso with an alcohol content of 15% vol.
