Calabria

DOC for dry red wine in the wine-growing region of Calabria in Italy. The zone includes the communes of Cassano allo Ionio, Castrovillari, Civita, Frascineto, San Basile and Saracena in the province of Cosenza, and is located at the foot of the Monte Pollino mountain, from which it takes the name, which is 2.100 metres high. The wine is made from Gaglioppo (60-100%), Greco Nero (20-40%), as well as from any combination of one or more of the varieties Guarnaccia Bianca, Malvasia Bianca and Montonico Bianco (up to 20%). If it is matured for a minimum of two years and has a minimum alcohol content of 12,5% vol it may be called a Superiore.
