Sicily

DOC for sweet dessert white wine on the island of Sicily off the coast of Italy. The zone includes the communes of Avola, Noto (from which the name is taken), Pachino and Rosolini in the province of Siracusa. It is thought that wines from this region, as well as the Moscato di Siracusa are the descendants of the legendary „Pollio di Siracusa“ and of the ancient wine mentioned by the elder Pliny (23-79 AD) as Haluntium. The wine is a varietal wine, made from raisined Moscato Bianco grapes. There are several versions: Naturale (11,5% vol), Spumante (13% vol) and the fortified Liquoroso (22% vol).
