DOC for sweet white wine on the island of Sicily off the coast of Italy. The zone includes the Liparian islands on the north coast (also known as the Aeolian islands). The name is derived from the largest island, Lipari. There are seven islands in all, but most of the wine is produced on Salina and Stromboli. The wine was made popular by the painter Carlo Hauner, who came from Brescia and founded a wine estate on Salina in 1963 – he successfully revived the old tradition of producing sweet dessert wines. The wine is made from Malvasia di Lipari (up to 95%) and Corinto Nero (5-8%). Dried grapes are used to make Passito Dolce Naturale (18% vol alcohol content) and Passito Liquoroso Dolce Naturale (20% vol).
