DOC for red, rosé and white wines in the Apulia wine-growing region in Italy. The zone includes the commune of Leverano, from which it takes the name, in the province of Lecce. The varietal-labelled Malvasia Bianca and Negroamaro (Rosso and Rosato) wines must be made of a minimum of 85% of the stated variety, the remainder may be made up of other permitted white resp. red varieties. Dry Bianco is usually a blend made from Malvasia Bianca (50-100%), Bombino Bianco (0-40%) and optionally from other permitted white varieties (up to 30%). The same combination of grapes is used to make Bianco Passito, from dried grapes, in amabile and dolce versions, as well as the Bianco Vendemmia Tardive from grapes harvested late. Dry Rosso (also made as a Novello) and Rosato are made from Negroamaro (50-100%), with any combination of one or more of Malvasia Nera di Lecce, Montepulciano and Sangiovese (0-40%), as well as optionally from other permitted red varieties (up to 30%). If it has a minimum alcohol content of 12,5% vol, and has been matured fort wo years, the Rosso may be called a Riserva.
