DOC (Italian: Caldaro or also Lago di Caldaro, German: Kalterer)) for dry red wine in the Alto Adige wine-growing region (Region Trentino-Alto-Adige/Südtirol) in Italy. The zone inlcudes the following communes, which lie around Lake Caldaro, from which the name is taken: Andriano, Appiano, Bronzolo, Caldaro, Cortaccia, Egna, Magre´ all´Adige, Montagna, Nalles, Ora, Termeno and Vedena in the province of Bolzena, as well as the communes of Cembra, Faedo, Giovo, Lavis, Lisignago, Mezzocorona, Rovere´ della Luna and San Michele all´Adige (with a famous oenological institute) in the province of Trento. The wine has a light garnet red colour, and a bouquet of bitter almonds, asn is a blend made from Schiava Grossa and/or Schiava Gentile and Schiava Grigia (85-100%), as well as optionally from Lagrein and/or Pinot Nero (up to 15%). If it has a minimum alcohol content of 11,5% vol (1% higher) it may be called Scelto (selected). Wines from the historical core region may state the additional designation Classico or Klassische Anbauzone on the label. A Superiore that has seen additional maturation is also available.
