DOCG for dry white wine in the wine-growing region of Piemonte in Italy, named after the town of the same name. The zone includes the communes of Bosio, Capriata ´Orba, Gavi, Carrosio, Francavilla Bisio, Novi Ligure, Parodi, Pasturana, San Cristoforo, Serravalle Scrivia and Tassarolo in the south-east of the province of Allessandria, in the area bordering on Liguria. Viticulture in Gavi has been documented as far back as 972. In the 1950s, Vittorio Soldati created the „Gavi di Gavi” on his La Scolca estate, this became the most expensive and most sought-after dry white wine in Italy in the 1970s. It was awarded DOC status in 1974, and promoted to DOCG level in 1998. On the label, the wine is also designated as Cortese di Gavi and (in the case of wines produced close to the town) as Gavi di Gavi. The wine has prominent acidity, it is fruity and aromatic and has a lemony taste, it is a varietal wine made from Cortese grapes. Some producers also mature the wine in barriques. There are also some Frizzante and Spumante versions.
