DOC for white wine in the wine-growing region of Latium in Italy. The zone has a total vineyard area of 2.800 hectares, most of the vineyards are on volcanic slopes and are part of the northern section of the large Castelli Romani region. The zone includes parts of the communes of Frascati, Grottaferrata, Monte Porzio Catone and Montecompatri, as well as parts of the city of Roma in the Roma province. It is a very old wine-growing region, documents show that the town of Frascati had 1.022 taverns in 1450. Today it is also one of the best-known Italian white wines internationally. The wine is made from Malvasia Bianca di Candia and Trebbiano Toscano (70-100%), Greco Bianco and/or Malvasia del Lazio (up to 30%), as well as optionally from other permitted white varieties (up to 10%). If it has a minimum alcohol content of 11,5% vol it may be called Superiore. The wine is produced in Secco, Amabile and Dolce (also known as Cannelino) versions, and a Spumante version is also available.
