Region in Italy with 58.237 hectares of vineyards; the capital city is Bologna. It stretches from the Adriatic sea in the east, where the Romagna region is, to the Emilia region in the interior, in the west. In the north, the Po river constitutes the border with Lombardy, in the south, the Apennines form the border with the regions of Liguria and Tuscany over a distance of almost 200 kilometres. The name of the Emilia region is derived from the Via Aemilia, a road built by the Romans in 187 BC, in order to connect the cities of Piacenza and Rimini. The Emilia is particularly well known for the predominantly sparkling resp. perlé red and rosé wines made from several varieties of the Lambrusco grape, most of which are mass products intended for early quaffing. In the Romagna region, red wines made from Sangiovese determine the style. Two thirds of the vineyard area is located on alluvial soils in the Po plains, the best growing areas are to be found on hilly sites in the foothills of the Apennines in the south. The most widely-planted white varieties are the Trebbiano variants Romagnolo and Toscano, Malvasia di Candia, Moscato Bianco, Ortrugo and Sauvignon Blanc. The most widely-planted red varieties are Sangiovese di Romagna, Barbera, Bonarda and Lambrusco. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are being planted increasingly. In addition, there are many indigenous varieties. The first white wine to be classified as DOCG in Italy was the Albana di Romagna, made from the grape of the same name. DOC wines make up only around 15% of total production. The DOC zones are:
