Sicily

DOC for dry red and rosé wines on the island of Sicily off the coast of Italy. The zone includes the communes of Noto, Pachino, Portopalo di Capo Passero and Rosolini in the province of Syracus, as well as Ispica in the province of Ragusa. The varietal wines Frappato and Nero d´Avola must contain a minimum of 90% of the stated variety, the Pignatello must contain at least 80% of the stated variety, the balance may be made up of other permitted varieties. Pachino is made from Nero d´Avola (80-100%), as well as optionally from Frappato and/or Pignatello (up to 20%). If matured for two years (of which six months in barrel) it may be called a Riserva. Rosso and Rosato are made from Frappato and/or Nero d´Avola and/or Pignatello (90-100%), as well as optionally from other permitted varieties (up to 10%).
