Piemont

DOC for dry red wines in the wine-growing region of Piemonte in Italy. The zone has a total vineyard area of around 1.500 hectares, and includes the commune of Ovada, from which it takes the name, as well as another 21 communes on both sides of the Orba valley in the province of Alessandria. The wine is ruby red and fruity, and is a pure varietal wine made from Dolcetto (formerly known here as Uva di Ovada) grapes. If it has a minimum alcohol content of 12,5% vol and has been matured for a year it may be called Superiore. Well-known producers include Ghera, La Gioia, La Guardia, Viviano Raffaella, Villa Sparina and Lo Zerbone.
