DOC for a wide range of red and white wines in the wine-growing region of Sicily, on the island off the coast of Italy. The zone is named after the river of the same name, and includes the communes of Marsala, Mazara del Vallo, Petrosino and Salemi in the province of Trapani.Varietal-labelled wines must contain a minimum of 85% of the variety stated, the rest must be made up of other permitted varieties of the same colour. These are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Damaschino, Grecanico, Grillo, Inzolia, Merlot, Nero d´Avola, Müller-Thurgau, Pignatello or Perricone, Sauvignon and Syrah. The white wines are also made as Spumantes. The red wines are also made in Novello versions. If matured for two years, the red wines may be called Riserva. The Bianco is made from any combination of Grecanico, Inzolia and Grillo (65-100%), as well as from other permitted white varieties (up to 35%). The Spumante is made from Grecanico (100%) or from any combination of Chardonnay, Damaschino, Grecanico, Grillo and Inzolia. If it contains a minimum of 85% of any one variety, this variety will be stated on the label. The Rosso (also made as a Novello) is made from any combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nero d´Avola, Pignatello, Perricone, Syrah and Sangiovese (65-100%), as well as optionally from other permitted red varieties (up to 35%).
