DOC for a wide range of red, rosé and white wines in the wine-growing region of Tuscany in Italy. The zone includes the town of Cortona, from which it takes its name, located on a mountain high above the Val di Chiana, as well as numerous communes in the province of Arezzo. The varietal-labelled wines must contain a minimum of 85% of the stated variety, the remainder may be made up of other permitted varieties of the same colour. The varietal wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gamay, Grechetto, Merlot, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero, Riesling Italico (Welschriesling), Sangiovese, Sauvignon and Syrah. The Rosato is a blend made from Sangiovese (40-60%), Canaiolo Nero (10-30%), as well as from other permitted red varieties. The white Vin Santo is made from a blend of any of the varieties Trebbiano Toscano, Grechetto and Malvasia Bianca Lunga (80-100%), as well as optionally from other permitted white varieties (up to 20%). If matured for five years it may be called a Riserva. The rosé Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice is made from Sangiovese and/or Malvasia Nera (80-100%), as well as optionally from other permitted red varieties (up to 20%).
