DOC for a wide range of dry red, rosé and white wines in the Piemonte wine-growing region in Italy. The zone has a total vineyard area of 1.500 hectares in the Tortona hills, including 30 communes in the province of Alessandria. The vineyards are located in the foothills of the Apennines, south-east of the town of Tortona. Rosso (also made asa Novello), Chiaretto (Rosato) and Bianco may be made from any combination of the permitted white resp. red varieties. Red Barbera (becomes a Superiore if it has a minimum alcohol content of 12,5% vol, and has been matured for a year) and Dolcetto (also made as a Novello) are made from the respective stated varieties (85-100%) as well as optionally from other permitted red varieties (up to 15%). White Cortese is a 100% pure varietal made from this grape, it is also available in Frizzante and Spumante versions.
