DOC for white, red and rosé wines in the wine-growing region of Tuscany in Italy. It is named after the town of the same name on the Ligurian coast. The „Guada al Tasso“ estate (300 ha) is located close to Bolgheri, one of the many estates owned by the famous Antinori wine empire. The zone includes the commune of Castagneto Carducci in the province of Livorno. The varietal wines Sauvignon and Vermentino must contain at least 85% of the respective varieties, the remainder must be made up of permitted white varieties. Bianco is a blend made from Trebbiano Toscano, Sauvignon and Vermentino (each 10-70%), as well as from other permitted white varieties (up to 30%). Rosso (also made as Superiore) and Rosato are blends made from Cabernet Sauvignon (10-80%), Sangiovese and Merlot (each up to 70%), as well as from other permitted red varieties (up to 30%). The Rosso gained status in 1994, in large part through the success of the Super-Tuscans (previously VdT´s) Ornellaia and Sassicaia – the latter of which was even classified as a separate DOC sub-zone Bolgheri Sassicaia. The Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice, a sweet rosé, is made from Sangiovese (50-70%), Malvasia Nera (30-50%), as well as from other permitted red varieties (up to 30%). It has an alcohol content of 16% vol and is matured in small barrels for three years. If matured for four years or more it may be called Riserva.
