DOC for red wine in the Piemont region. in Italy This is a large zone with a total vineyard area of 4.300 hectares. It includes around 120 communes in the province of Asti and around 100 communes in the province of Alessandria. The vineyard areas registered for Barbera d'Asti may not be used for this appellation (until 2007, overlapping was possible, and wine producers were allowed to decide which designation they preferred to use).The wine is made from the Barbera grape (minimum 85%), while the following grapes may also be used in any combination: Freisa, Grignolino and Dolcetto (maximum 15% in total). The wine mst have a minimum alcohol content of 11,5% vol. The Barbera del Monferrato Superiore designation was elevated to DOCG status in 2008. The alacohol content must be a minimum of 13%, and the wine must be matured for a minimum of 14 months, of which 6 months in barrel. The wines are available as still wines or in frizzante versions. Well-known producers include Accornero, Bricco dei Guazzi, Iuli, Il Mongetto, La Tessitora, Valpane and Vicara.
