The „Cantina Alcesti“ estate is located in Marsala in the province of Trapani on the Italian island of Sicily, with ist eponymous wine-growing region. The family has been living here for many generations, but wine for sale under an own label has only been produced since 2003, previously grapes were sold to other larger wine producers. The entire business was modernised and re-organised, from the grape receiving area via the temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to the cellar with the French tonneaux and barriques. The vineyard area totals 30 hectares, which are planted with local varieties such as Nero d´Avola, Grillo, Grecanico and Pignatello (Perricone), as well as with the international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot. Annual production is around 200.000 bottles of wine, of which two thirds are white, and one third red.
The vintage 2006
A small but thoroughly enjoyable range of wines with very pure white wines that are a pleasure to drink, and a powerful Syrah that may still improve a little with some maturation.
