Appellation (also known as Patra) on the north coast of the island of Peloponnes in Greece, named after the port city of the same name on the Ionian Sea. The total vineyard area is around 4.000 hectares. The indigenous grape varieties Mavrodaphne, Roditis and Sideritis, as well as Muscat (Muscat Blanc) are grown here. There are four wines of the highest quality classification (OPAP for dry wines, OPE for sweet dessert wines). These are the dry white wine Patras (Roditis), the two fortified sweet dessert wines, made by different methods, Muscat of Patras and Muscat of Rio(n) Patras (Muscat Blanc), as well as the red dessert wine made in the style of port, Mavrodaphne of Patras (mainly from Mavrodaphne, with a little Korinthiaki), which is matured in barrel for up to 12 years. Well-known producers include Achaia Clauss, Antonopoulos, Kourtakis and Parparoussis.
