Appellation named after the city of the same name in the region of Macedonia in Greece (Greek: Naousa). The vineyard area totals around 800 hectares, and it is one of the best wine-growing regions in Greece, a Cru classification is currently in progress. The vineyards are located on the south-westerly slopes of the Vermio massif, at an altitude of between 200 and 350 metres above sea level. The climate is characterised by cool winters and abundant rainfall. The OPAP red wine is a pure varietal made from the indigenous variety Xynomavro, it is made in dry, off-dry and semi-sweet versions. Regulations stipulate it must be matured for at least one year in oak, it is a very long-lived wine. The best-known producers are Arampatzi, Boutari, Cavino, Chrysohoou, Dalamaras, Diamandakos, Fountis, Giorgiadis, Karydas, Kastaniotis, Kir-Yanni, Melitzanis, Tsantali and Vaeni.
