The „Mercouri Estate“ cellars, with their headquarters close to the city of Olympia in the west of the island of Peloponnes in Greece was founded in 1860 by Theodore Mercouri, who came from Alexandria in Egypt. In 1870, he imported the Italian grape variety Refosco from Friuli (from where his family originated), and planted his first vineyard with this. At the time, wine was exported to Triest in barrels. In addition, olive oil and raisins (currants) were – and still are - produced. Leonidas Mercouri, the son of the founder, established the first modern wine cellar in this region in the 1930’s, and ran the estate until 1955. From then on, grapes were still grown, but no own wines were produced. The brothers Vassilis and Christos Kanellakopoulos, who are the fourth generation of Mercouri cuccessors, reactivated the business in 1990. They imported a new clone of Refosco, the vine is traditionally known as the Mercouri vine in this region. Extensive experiments with indigenous and international grape varieties are under way. The vineyards are planted with the red varieties Avgoustiatis, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Noir, Mavrodaphne, Merlot, Mourvèdre, Refosco, Sangiovese and Syrah, as well as with the white varieties Malvasia Aromatica, Ribolla Gialla, Roditis, Sauvignon Blanc, Tourkopoula and Viognier. The flagship wines are the red wine Ktima Mercouri made from Refosco (85%) and Mavrodaphne (15%), as well as the white wine Foloi made from the Roditis grape. A speciality is the Hortes, which is produced in small quantities from dried Mavrodaphne and Korinthiaki grapes, then matured in oak barrels for five years, it is fortified and has an alcohol level of 18%. Other products include the red wine Antaris (Avgoustiatis, Mourvèdre), the rosé Orion (Grenache Noir), as well as the white wines Kallisto (Tourkopoula, Ribolla Giala) and Coma Berenices (Viognier).
