The „Ktima Hatzigeorgiou“ estate is located in Karpassi on the island of Limnos in the eastern Aegean, it is part of Greece. The family has a long tradition both in wine production and in the wine trade. The family originally hails for Smyrna (Izmir) in Turkey, where grandfather Petros owned a wine estate. In 1922 the family emigrated to the island of Lesbos, was then active in Athens from 1927, and finally settled on Limnos in 1987. In the first few years, Themistoklis Hatzigeorgiou and his son Petros produced spirits such as Tsipouro and Ouzo. Petros took over the business in 1998, and decided to focus on wine production, he also invested in new buildings and facilities. The new estate commenced production in 2007, and includes guest rooms as well as a restaurant. The whole family is involved, including son Themistoklis (production and marketing), daughter Polixeni (responsible for the wine cellar, following her oenology studies in Bordeaux, and two years working at Château Margaux) and son Leonidas (vineyard manager, and consultant for the contract growers).
The estate has seven hectares of own vineyards, these are planted with Muscat d´Alexandrie and Kalabaki (Limnio). Grapes are also bought in from five strictly controlled contract growers, who cultivate a further 20 hectares. Yields are severely reduced, averaging only 45 to 50 hl/ha. The range of products includes two dry OPAP wines, „Limnia Gi“ and „Limnios Ambelourgos“ (both made from Muscat d´Alexandrie), as well as two sweet OPE wines (Vin naturellement doux) made from dried grapes in the style of a Liastos, as well as several table wines. In the production of sweet wines, fermentation is interrupted, and part of the wine is bottled as a „Moschatos Limnou“. The remainder is matured for 5 to 6 years in old oak barrels holding 500 litres each, and is then sold under the name of „Ifaistou Gnossi“. A sweet wine called „Lagopati“ was produced for the first time in 2008, using cryoextraction to produce a type of ice wine. Around 280.000 bottles of wine are produced each year.
Description of the Wines
The sweet wines here can be really great - in addition, Hatzigeorgiou makes one of the best red wines from Greece we have come across. More of the same, please!
