This Greek wine estate was founded by agronomist Leon Karatsolas and winemaker Yiannis Paraskevopoulos, who is quite famous in Greece. The name (Mother Earth) was chosen in honour of the Greek goddess of fertility, and the mother of all generations of gods. The philosophy of the estate is to concentrate exclusively on indigenous Greek grape varieties, and to utilise their potential to the full. Before an own winery was built, a lot of time was spent analysing which regions and which local grape varieties promised the greatest potential. They decided on the island of Santorin (Assyrthiko) and Nemea (Agiorgitiko) on the Peloponnes. In co-operation with another winery, the eponymous OPAP white wine was produced on Santorin in 1994, under the Thalassitis label. An own winery was then built in the Koutsi sub-region of Nemea in 1997, and grape production started on a vineyard area of seven hectares, wine was then also made there. By now, grapes are also ought in from contract growers. The OPAP red wine (from Agiorgitiko grapes) is produced there under the Gaia Estate label. Red and white table wines are produced under the Notios label. A very light rosé table wine is made from Agiorgitiko grapes, the name is “14-18h“, indicative of the short time the must is kept on the skins. In addition, a retsina is marketed under the name Ritinitis Nobilis. Annual production is around 30.000 cases (360.000 bottles) of wine.
