The „Estate Biblia Chora“ winery is located in the small town of Kokkinochori directly on the Aegean coast, close to the trading centre of Kavala in the foothills of the Pangeon mountains in Macedonia in northern Greece. It has been named after the traditional designation for the region located between the ancient town of Amfipolis and Kavala, and lies at the centre of this area. The famous „Biblinos Oinos“ (wine of Biblinos) was produced here in ancient times, from the grape variety of the same name. After several years of preparatory work, the estate was founded in 2001 by two Greeks, Evangelos Gerovassiliou and Vassilis Tsaktsarlis. Gerovassiliou studied agricultural sciences in Thessaloniki, and oenology in Bordeaux. He then worked as an oenologist at Domaine Carras and at the family’s own estate. Tsaktsarlis studied chemistry in Thessaloniki, and then viticulture and oenology in Bordeaux. He then worked as an oenologist at the Domaine Carras, Boutari and Domaine Costa Lazaridi estates. The winery building has been built in the style of a Bordeaux château. The vineyard area totals 25 hectares of own vineyards, with an additional 10 hectares to be planted gradually. Organic winemaking practices are implemented, and the estate is a certified organic producer. In addition, grapes are bought in from contract growers with an additional 10 hectares of vineyards. Varieties planted include the indigenous varieties Assyrtico and Agiorgitiko, as well as the international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Syrah. The average yield is 50 hectolitres per hectare. The red wines as well as some of the white wines are matured in new French barriques. The premium wines include the „Ovilos“ (white wine made from Sémillon and Assyrtiko, red wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon), „Areti“ (white wine made from Assyrtico, red wine made from Agiorgitiko), as well as the red wine „Ktima Biblia Chora Merlot“, which is matured in barriques for 16 months. Around 350.000 bottles of wine were produced in the 2006 vintage year.
