One of the largest merchant houses in Greece, with its headquarters in Thessaloniki in the Macedonia region. The company was founded by Ioannis Boutaris in 1879, and is currently headed by the fourth generation of the family, in the form of Constantine Boutaris and his daughter Marina. There are vineyard holdings in practically all wine-growing regions in Greece. A wide range of country wines and quality wines is produced and/or distributed, including the Greek specialities retsina and Samos. Annual production is around 13 million litres, of which about half is exported, with half the exports going to Germany. The range includes varietal wines and blends produced from the most popular indigenous varieties (Assyrtiko, Agiorgitiko, Moscophilero, Roditis, Xynomavro and others), as well as from European standard varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Silvaner and Sauvignon Blanc. The range includes OPAP wines from the best wine-growing regions resp. appellations in Greece, such as Goumenissa, Crete, Naoussa, Nemea, Paros and Santorini, with branch offices resp. cellars in each of these regions. An ultra-modern cellar called „Domaine Fantaxometocho“ was built in 2004, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the company. A brand name produced is, for example, the „Cava Boutari“, which is a blend of Xinomavro (from Naoussa) and Agiorgitiko (from Nemea); it is matured for a year in barriques, and then for a further year in bottle. A flagship product is the „Grande Reserve Boutari Naoussa“, made from specially selected Xynomavro grapes, then matured for two years in barriques, and a further two years in bottle before being released for sale.
