Region in the south-eastern peninsula of Greece, it covers an area of 3800 km², in which the national capital Athens is located. Attica, together with the neighbouring island Euboea (modern Greek: Ewwia) to the east, and the region of Boeothia (Viotia or Vöotia) to the north, is collectively known as central greece. The area was first populated by the Ionians, who arrived from the northern Balkan region around 2000 BC. They were later the most advanced of the Greek tribes, their proximity to the oriental countries brought them great wealth as well as a high level of culture in poetry (Archilochos and Homer), architecture and the fine arts (Ionic style). In the 9th century BC, they were then forced by the Dorians to the Ionic islands, named after the tribe, and to the coast of Asia Minor, on the mainland they survived only in Attica and Euboea. This large area today produces one third of all wine made in Greece. However, due to the warm, dry climate the region has only very few grape varieties. The white Saviatino grape dominates around 90% of the vineyard area, this is the standard variety for the large quantities of Retsina produced here (wine with resin). Practically the whole balance of the vineyard area is planted with Roditis grpaes, which are used for blending. However, foreign grape varieties are becoming more popular and important, as shows impressively by the large Hatzimichalis estate. There are no classified appellations (OPAP), but many red, white and rosé country wines (Topikos Oinos) are produced. The largest and best-known producers include, for example, Cambas, Château Matsa, Evharis, Hatzimichalis, Kokotos, Kourtakis and Strofilia.
