The appellation (also known as Amyndeon) is located in the region of Macedonia in Greece, and is named after the city of the same name. This is the most northerly wine-growing region in Greece. The vineyard area totals around 1.200 hectares, the vineyards are located on the north-west-facing slopes of the Vermio (Velia mountains) at an altitude of around 600 to 650 metres above sea-level. The OPAP rosé and red wines are made from the Xynomavro grape. Well-known producers include Alpha Estate, Amynteon Cooperative Winery, Hatzis, Pavlou Winery and Tsantali.
