Huge Greek wine producer and merchant company, with headquarters in the harbour city of Patras (with eponymous appellation), located in the North of the Peloponnes island. The company was founded in 1854 by Gustav Clauss, a German who had immigrated from Bavaria. The first wine, made from the red variety Mavrodaphne, was produced in 1860. As of 1869, wines were exported, first to Germany, and then to many other European countries. A wide range of wines is produced under a total of 70 labels, ranging from dry to sweet, and sourced from the Peloponnes and from Crete. Among the best-known and most widely sold wines in Greece are the Demestika White, a blend of Roditis, Sideritis and other varieties. Other well-known brands include the white wines Peloponnesiakos (Roditis, Chardonnay, Ugni Blanc), Filambelo (selected Roditis and Chardonnay grapes), Neanikos (Chardonnay with some Ugni Blanc) and Melissia (Moscato), as well as the red wines Mavrodafni (the initial OPAP dessert wine from Patras, also available in a Reserve version), Epiloyi (Agiorgitiko), Demestika Red (Agiorgitiko), Peloras (Cabernet Sauvignon, Agiorgitiko) and the OPAP wine Leonteias (Agiorgitiko) from the Nemea appellation. Naturally, the typically Greek products Retsina and Ouzo are also produced. Some 35 million bottles are produced annually. A large portion of this is exported to a total of 40 countries.
Description of the Wines
The quality across the range is rather varied, and not all of the wines submitted so far have made it past the publication threshold. However, the sweet red wines are excellent.
