The Jost family has been involved in wine production for almost 200 years. The current owner represents the fifth generation in the family line. Dipl. Ing. Peter Jost took over the estate from his father Toni in 1975, and it is in his honour that the estate has broken with its established tradition of naming the estate after the current owner. The vineyard area totals 12 hectares, which are spread over two wine-growing regions. The headquarters of the estate, with just more than eight hectares of vineyards, is located in the village of Bacharach in the Mittelrhein wine-growing region. The Hahn vineyard site is almost completely owned by the family, and it is from this that the additional name „Hahnenhof“ is derived. The second estate has 3,5 hectares of vineyards with holdings in the Walkenstein site in Walluf in the Rheingau wine-growing region. This was founded as a mixed farming operation with vineyards, fruit orchards and a mill, and was acquired in 1953 as an inheritance. The wines are made in Bacharach. 80% of the total vineyard area is planted with Riesling, as well as with Pinot Noir (15%), Pinot Blanc and Dunkelfelder. Organic vineyard practices are implemented, using compost as fertiliser, encouraging useful insects and avoiding insecticides. Selective hand-picking takes place as late as possible, with several passages through each vineyard. Fermentation is slow at low temperatures. Depending on their suitability, wines are matured wither in stainless steel tanks or in oak barrels, the best Pinot Noirs are matured in barriques for 12 to 15 months. The wines from the Hahn and Walkenberg sites are marketed as Grand Crus. Bottle-fermented sparkling wine is also produced. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association in both wine-growing regions.
