The estate is located in the commune of Winterbach in the Württemberg wine-growing region in Germany. The wine-growing tradition of the family goes back to the early 16th century, but the current wine estate was only established in 1949, and was only fully converted to winemaking ten years later. From the outset, Jürgen Ellwanger has sought to produce high quality, although he really only made the breakthrough to theproduction of top-level wines with the foundation of the Hades group in 1986, whose members are among the pioneers of barrique-matured wines in Germany. Today, the estate is considered to be one of the best in its region. The foundation for the high quality achieved was laid by Jürgen Ellwanger, together with his son Jörg, with extremely careful attention to detail in the vineyard, employing sustainable practices, as well as some of the ideas of biodynamic viticulture. In the cellar, a policy of minimal intervention is followed. The responsibility in the cellar has by now passed to son Andreas Ellwanger. The vineyard area totals 20 hectares, with holdings in the following sites: Altenberg, Burghalde and Sonnenberg (Schnait), Grafenberg (Schorndorf), Hungerberg (Winterbach), as well as Lichtenberg (Hebsacker). Grape varieties planted are Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, Lemberger, Dornfelder, Regent, Syrah, Merlot, Pinot Madeleine, Portugieser, Trollinger, Muskat-Trollinger, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Rivaner and Kerner. Sparkling wines, spirits (fruit-based, brandy and grappa-style) as well as vinegars are also produced. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association, and a founder member of the barrique producers association HADES.
