The estate is located in the commune of Oberhausen in the Nahe wine-growing region in Germany. The family has been involved in wine production for at least two hundred years. Grandfather Herrmann Dönnhoff Senior already had a great passion for Riesling, and focussed on winemaking, as well as on the puchase of the best vineyard sites available in the area. His son Hermann Dönnhoff Junior continued this tradition. When Helmut Dönnhoff produced his first vintage in 1971, at the age of 22, the estate had already been converted to a fully dedicated wine estate. He is considered without a doubt to be one of the leading winemakers in Germany, and is a living legend. His saying that „My vineyards are like my children“ makes it clear how much attention is paid to careful work in the vineyards. The vineyard area totals 12,5 hectares, with parcels widely spread in the communes of Bad Kreuznach (Mollenbrunnen, Osterhöll), Niederhausen (Hermannshöhle), Norheim (Dellchen, Kirschheck), Oberhausen (Brücke, Felsenberg, Kieselberg, Leistenberg) and Schloßböckelheim (Felsenberg, Kupfergrube). 75% of the area is planted with Riesling, the remainder with Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. Cultured yeasts are employed for fermentation where necessary, but natural yeasts are preferred wherevewr possible. Both the classical dry Riesling wines, which are matured in old oak vats, and the Eiswein wines of the estate have achieved cult status both in Germany and internationally (England and USA). Annual production is around 100.000 bottles of wine. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association.
