The estate is located in the village of Bönnigheim in the Württemberg wine-growing region in Germany. Ernst Dautel took over the business from his parents in 1978, until that time the grapes produced were delivered to the local co-operative. He began making his own wines, and built up the size from an original vineyard area of two hectares to 10,5 hectares today. The vineyards are located on the eastern foothills of the Stromberg mountain. They are spread over several vineyard parcels in the Sonnenberg (Bönnigheim) and Wurmberg (Besigheim) sites. 60% of the grapes planted are red varieties: Lemberger, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Samtrot, the remaining 40% are the white varieties Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. Sustainable vineyard practices are implemented, including cover crops and integrated use of natural methods to control harmful insects. Four ranges of wines are produced. A label without a star indicates a basic estate wine, two stars indicate a good quality, three stars a top wine. Four stars indicate the wine has been matured in barrique. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association, as well as of the producers association Deutsches Barrique-Forum.
