The wine estate „Sanitätsrat Dr. Hermann“ is located in the town of Ürzig (Bernkastel area) in the Mosel wine-growing region in Germany. The family has been involved in winemaking for several centuries. In its present form, the estate came about in 1967, as part of the estate division of the Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben estate. A new cellar was built in Erden, and the production side of the business moved there from Ürzig. The estate has been run since 1974 by Rudi Hermann, and he has been supported in the vineyards, and especially in the cellar, since 2000 by his son Christian. The vineyard area totals 6,3 hectares, with holdings in the following sites: Herrenberg and Treppchen (Erden), Würzgarten (Ürzig), Försterlay (Lösnich), as well as Rosenberg (Kinheim). In the vineyards, sustainable practices are implemented, harvesting is done by hand, with selective picking in several tries. Gentle pressing is followed by a long fermentation process of six to twelve weeks in stainless steel tanks, with the wines maturing on the lees without any oxygen contact. When conditions permit, higher predicate, i.e. dessert wines are also produced. The premium wines include those from the Treppchen and Würzgarten sites, with grapes sourced from ungrafted Riesling vines. The other wines are mostly marketed as „Dr. Hermann Gutsriesling“. Around 80% of production is exported, mostly to the USA, Japan and Great Britain.
