The „Deutzerhof Cossmann-Hehle“ estate is located in the town of Mayschoß in the Ahr wine-growing region in Germany. This estate has a long tradition going back to the 16th century, with Caspar Cossmann and his wife Catharina being mentioned as wine farmers as early as 1574. In 1952, Alfred Cossmann decided to do his own marketing for the wines produced on his then 3,5 hectares of vineyard. The current owner Wolfgang Hehle was a tax adviser before marrying into the wine-making Cossmann family, he now continues the wine-making tradition in the 12th generation. He reduced the range of different wines produced, and doubled the vineyard area by buying excellent parcels of land on terraced steep slopes. The business has grown continuously through the purchase of additional vineyards. Eventually, the old family home in the Dorfstraße in Mayschoss became too small. Therefore the family decided to build a new winery on the historical Deutzerwiese plot of land. An external post of the abbey at Deutz/Cologne used to stand here. The monks involved in winemaking were forced to return to their headquarters in 1826. Even today, old maps list the „Deutzerberg“ as the vineyard sites that used to belong to the abbey. The new winery was commissioned in 1980. It was decided to call the new wine estate „Deutzerhof“, making it independent of any family succession. The vineyard area totals nine hectares, with holdings in the following sites: Berg (Laach), Daubhaus and Forstberg (Ahrweil), Eck (Altenahr), Burgberg and Mönchberg (Mayschoß), Herrenberg (Rech), Kirchtürmchen (Neuenahr), as well as Landskrone (Heimersheim). Only some of these are mentioned on the labels, for example the Altenahrer Eck and Mayschoßer Mönchberg. Varieties planted are Pinot Noir (75%), Dornfelder (9%), Riesling (9%), Pinot Madeleine (4%), Chardonnay (2%) and Blauer Portugieser (1%). It is worth mentioning the small-berried clone of Pinot Noir, known as „Kaasten“, which has been grown on the steep slopes of the Ahr valley for centuries. The Riesling vines are more than half a century old, while the Portugieser grapes date back to the 1920’s. Most of the wines are matured in small oak barrels. A speciality are the Riesling Beerenauslese, Trockenberenauslese and Eiswein wines. Annual production is around 60.000 bottles of wine. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association.
