The estate is located in the commune of Malterdingen (Breisgau area) in the Baden wine-growing region in Germany. The estate delivered its grapes to a co-operative until 1987, since then the wines have been made on the estate, and marketed as such. The owners are Barbara and Bernhard Huber. Cisteercian monks first brought Pinot Noir vines to Malterdingen in the 14th century. The abbey’s farm buildings were located on the site of the Huber estate. Old documents show the use of „Malterdinger“ as a synonym for Pinot Noir. The vineyard area totals 26 hectares, with holdings in the Bienenberg (Malterdingen) and Sommerhalde (Bombach) sites. Grape varieties planted are Pinot Noir (18,2 ha), Chardonnay (2,6 ha), Pinot Blanc (2,3 ha), Pinot Gris (1,6 ha), Auxerrois, Freisamer, Muskateller, Müller-Thurgau, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot bestockt. Grapes are also bought in. All the wines are fermented dry, and are left on the lees for an extended period. The best red wines are matured in barriques for up to 18 months. The premium wines include, for example, particularly the various Pinot Noirs, such as the „Reserve“ and „Alte Reben“ (old vines), as well as the „Malterdinger Bienenberg Großes Gewächs Weißer Burgunder Spätlese“ (Pinot Blanc Grand Cru). Another speciality of the estate is the white blend „Malterer“, produced from Pinot Blanc and Freisamer. In addition, bottle-fermented sparkling wines are produced that are kept on the yeast for up to seven years. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association as well as of the Winzervereinigung Deutsches Barrique-Forum association.
