The estate is located in the town of Vogtsburg-Burkheim (Kaiserstuhl area) in the Baden wine-growing region in Germany. The Bercher family’s coat of arms can be traced back to 1457. First evidence of the family’s involvement in winemaking dates from the 17th century. The estate buildings, with a vaulted cellar, were built in the centre of the picturesque town of Burkheim around 1750. Today, the ninth and tenth generations of the family, Martin Bercher together with his father Eckhardt are responsible for tending the vineyards, while Rainer Bercher and his son Arne are responsible fort he cellar, and the winemaking. The vineyard area totals 22 hectares, with holdings in the renowned sites Burkheimer Feuerberg, Burkheimer Schlossgarten, Jechtinger Eichert, Königschaffhausener Hasenberg and Sasbacher Limburg. Grape varieties planted are Pinot Noir (10 ha), Pinot Gris (5,3 ha), Pinot Blanc (3,4 ha), Riesling (1,9 ha), Chardonnay (1,7 ha), and Müller-Thurgau (0,5 ha). Integrated, sustainable vineyard practices are implemented, using the most modern findings related to organic wine production. In contrast to the practices of many other estates, vines here are replaced after around 25 years in order to ensure optimum stability of production and yields. Vinification follows traditional lines. The Berchers rigorously reject modern winemaking practices such as must concentration, or the manipulation of the colour of Pinot Noir by the addition of darker wines. To ensure the absolute varietal purity of their wines, excess volumes are not blended in according to the “15 % rule”, but are vinified separately in large glass jugs. The aim is to produce wines with a good potential for maturation, and to this end wines are left on the lees for an extended period. The red wines are matured in large oak vats, while the wines of the Selection range are matured in barriques. The wines regularly receive high ratings in all the leading wine guides. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines as well as brandies, fruit-based spirits and grappa-style spirits are also produced. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association.
