The „St. Urbans-Hof Oekonomierat Nic. Weis“ wine estate is located in the commune of Leiwen (Bernkastel district) in the Mosel wine-growing region in Germany. It was founded in 1957 by Oekonomierat Nicolaus Weis (1905-1971), and named after the patron saint of wine producers, St. Urban (pope Urban I.). The founder had previously also run a general farming operation, then founded a vine nursery at the same time, and moved the entire operation from the centre of the town to a new location in the middle of the vineyards. Following the death of the founder, his son Hermann Weis and his wife Ida took over the business in 1971. Right up until 1989, the St.-Urbans-Hof marketed both bottled and bulk wines. However, the bulk wine business was discontinued as a result of the declining prices in this sector. The size of the business was expanded significantly. Today, the vineyard area totals 35 hectares in the following sites: Lagen Bockstein (Ockfen), Goldtröpfchen (Piesport), Laurentiuslay (Leiwen), Saarfeilser Marienberg (Schoden) and Schlangengraben (Wiltingen). The area is planted primarily with Riesling (30 ha), as well as with some Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Blanc, these are planted at a debsity of 7.000 vines per hectare, using the traditional single pole trellising system. The estate is currently run by Nikolaus Weis, the third generation of the family. He initially studied in the USA as well as at the Vineland Estates winery in Canada, which was founded by Hermann Weis, before starting his studies at the college in Geisenheim in 1993. Nikolaus Weis then joined the family business full-time in 1997. Together with cellar master Rudolf Hoffmann he developed and rapidly implemented a new philosophy of quality. Yields were restricted even more than in the past, green harvesting was introduced, and the 1998 vintage was the first one in which natural yeasts were used to ferment some of the wines. The results were so good that the entire production was switched to the use of natural yeasts in 1999. Today all musts are left on the skins for a short period, with sedimentation over a period of 12 hours, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks after pressing. The wines are then matured on the lees in large oak barrels. They are then bottled in dark flute bottles with the distinctive black-and-gold St. Urbans-Hof label. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association.
