The estate is located in the Mosel wine-growing region in Germany. It is first mentioned in documents dating back to 1349, and 1999 saw the celebration of the 650th anniversary. Friedrich von Kesselstatt was appointed by the prince elector as the manager of the royal cellars in 1377. When Count Hugo Casimir Graf von Kesselstatt was the master of the royal lands from 1761 to 1794, prince elector Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony Wettin in 1787 issued an order demanding that in future better grape varieties (referring basically to Riesling) should be planted instead of the „reprehensible Rhenish varieties“. The estate was taken over by the Reh family in 1978, and is today run by Annegret Reh-Gartner and Gerhard Gartner. The previous home of the estate was the Palais Kesselstatt in Trier, this was built in baroque style from 1740 to 1746 on the foundations of a Roman glass factory. This building now houses the restaurant and wine bar of the estate. The administration was moved to the Schloss Marienlay palace in the Ruwer valley in 1999. All the wines have been produced there since 1988 in the newly built cellar. The vineyard area totals 38 hectares, including holdings in all the best sites in the three valleys. The sites include the Doctor (Bernkastel), Juffer Sonnenuhr (Brauneberg), Domprobst as well as the monopole site Josephshöfer (Graach), Nies´chen and Kehrnagel (Kasel), Bockstein (Ockfen), Domherr and Goldtröpfchen (Piesport), Sonnenuhr (Wehlen), as well as Gottesfuß, Kupp and Scharzhofberg (Wiltingen). The area is planted exclusively with Riesling. All wines are fermented with natural yeasts, and are kept on the lees for an extended period. The wines are made in traditional style, in order to maintain the terroir character. The wines are marketed in several ranges: estate wines, Kollektion Mosel, Kollektion Saar and Kollektion Ruwer.Spirits (pear, yellow plum and grappa-style) as well as bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association.
