The estate is located in the commune of Laumersheim in the Pfalz wine-growing region in Germany. It was founded in 1874 by the Knipser family, which originated in Alto Adige. Fruit as well as general farming were carried on in addition to wine farming, and wines were sold in bulk. In 1948, this was one of the first estates in the region to start bottling and marketing its own wines, selling to restaurants and private consumers. The estate was converted completely to wine production in the 1970’s. The current owners Volker and Werner Knipser began maturing wines in barrique in the mid-1980’s, and today are regarded as being among the leading specialists in Germany for this method. The vineyard are totals 26 hectares, with holdings in the communes of Laumersheim, Großkarlbach and Dirmstein. Red varieties planted include Pinot Noir (9 ha), St. Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Dornfelder, Syrah and Lemberger, as well as the white varieties Riesling (7 ha), Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gelber Orleans, Auxerrois, Sauvignon Blanc, Sylvaner and Gewürztraminer. Among the premium wines are the „Himmelsrech“ Dirmsteiner Mandelpfad Riesling, „Steinbuckel“ Laumersheimer Mandelberg Riesling, „Im Großen Garten“ Großkarlbacher Burgweg Riesling and „Im Großen Garten“ Großkarlbacher Burgweg Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), all of which are declared as Grand Crus (Grosses Gewächs), as well as the red Bordeaux-style blend X (CS, Merlot, Cabernet Franc).
