The estate is located in the city of Würzburg in the Franken wine-growing region in Germany. It was founded in 1576 by prince bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn (1545-1617), along the lines of the Hospices de Beaune. For this purpose, he acquired the „Judengarten“ (Jews garden) site outside the old city precincts. Even while the prince bishop was still alive, he transferred adequate income and extensive property holdings to the foundation, this included agricultural and forestry land as well as vineyards, including holdings in the world-famous Würzburger Stein site. A hospital as well as other charitable institutions are maintained to this day. The vaulted cellar is 250 metres long, and was built by Antonio Petrini in 1699. There is an own vinotheque, called the “Weinecke Julius Echter“. The vineyards have a total area of 168 hectares, and are spread all over Franken. The holdings include parts of the Mainhölle site in Bürgstadt; Lump in Escherndorf; Domherr and Julius-Echter-Berg in Iphofen; Pfülben and Teufelskeller in Randersacker; Küchenmeister in Rödelsee; Johannisberg in Thüngersheim; Karthäuser in Volkach, as well as the Abtsleite, Innere Leiste, Pfaffenberg and Stein sites in Würzburg. Grape varieties palnted are Silvaner (48 ha), Müller-Thurgau (21 ha), Riesling (20 ha), Pinot Noir (8 ha), Bacchus (6 ha), Scheurebe (3 ha), Rieslaner (2 ha), Domina (2 ha), Traminer (2 ha), Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Muskateller and others. The wines are fermented slowly, and are then matured on the lees. Maturation is in a combination of stainless steel tanks and in oak vats, some of which are more than 100 years old. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association.
