The estate is located in the commune of Hattenheim (part of Eltville) in the Rheingau wine-growing region in Germany. It was founded by Johann Josef Lang in 1953, and has been run by his son Johann Maximilian Lang since 1972. The vineyard area totals 18 hectares, including, for example, holdings in the Grand Cru classified Hassel and Wisselbrunnen (Hattenheim)sites. 75% of the area is planted with Riesling, the remainder is planted with the following varieties: Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Silvaner, Gewürztraminer as well as 15% of Pinot Noir. Integrated, sustainable vineyard practices are implemented. Qulity criteria include reduced yields and selective hand-picking. Around 85% of the white wines and 100% of the red wines are produced in a dry style. When vintage conditions permit, sweet botrytis dessert wines such as Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, as well as Eiswein are produced. The Riesling grapes first undergo whole-bunch pressing, and are then matured in
temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, large oak barrels or in barriques. In addition, bottle-fermented sparkling wines as well as spirits (brandy, grappa-style) are also produced. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association, as well as of the Deutsches Barrique-Forum association.
