The estate is located in the commune of Lorch in the Rheingau wine-growing region in Germany. It was founded in 1826 specifically to supply the hotel „Der Schwan“, which is run by the Altenkirch family, with wine. In 1878 the German emperor Wilhelm I. (1797-1888) stayed there, and the Altenkirch estate was appointed supplier to the court. The estate was acquired in 1934 by Dr. Franz Breuer from Rüdesheim, it was then run by his widow after his death, and has been run by his daughter Franziska Breuer-Hadwiger since 1994. Andreas von Rosen joined in 2005 as a new shareholder. Peter Weritz ist he cellarmaster. The vineyard area totals 20 hectares, mainly in steep sloping sites such as Bodentahl-Steinberg, Krone and Schlossberg (Lorch). The area is planted mainly with Riesling (70%) and Pinot Noir (20%), as well as with small amounts of Pinot Blanc, Rivaner, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Madeleine. Vineyard practices are designed to keep the yields low, and integrated, sustainable practices are implemented. Grapes are selectively hand-picked, and mainly wild yeasts are used for fermentation. The cellar is naturally cool, and only small batches are produced, so there is no need for refrigeration. The white wines remain on the lees for an extended period, and are matured in the vaulted cellar mainly in stainless steel tanks. Red wines are matured in classic large oak barrels or in barriques. Three editions are produced. The „Altenkirch-Edition“ includes typical varietal wines. The „Terroir-Edition“ consists exclusively of Riesling wines, these are made separately according to the soil they come from – loess, grey slate and quartz slate – and are marketed as such. A part batch of the Riesling Quarzschiefer (Quarzschiefer „R“) is left on the lees for an even longer period each year, in order to achieve even greater complexity. The top-rated edition is sourced from the Krone and Schlossberg sites in Lorch, and bears the signature of Dr. Franz Breuer. Following intensive tests, production has been switched entirely to the use of Stelvin screwcaps. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced, and when vintage conditions permit, sweet botrytis wines are produced. A special feature is that individuals can lease one or more vines owned by the estate.
