This wine estate is located in the village of Scharzhof-Wiltingen in the Mosel wine-growing region in Germany. It was previously attached to an abbey, and at the end of the 18th century was on Luxemburgian territory. It was secularised in 1797 under Napoleonic (1769-1821) rule. Part of the property was acquired by Felix Müller (1810-1888) by marriage in 1837). Untder his son Egon Müller I. (1853-1932) the property fell entirely to the Müller family, and in the following years he led the estate to great success and renown, participating successfully in several world exhibitions. The estate has been run since 1991 by the fifth generation of the family, Egon Müller IV. The core of the property are the vineyards on the steep slopes of the famous Scharzhofberg site, here seven hectares are owned by the family. 95% of the vines are Riesling. Grapes are brought in over several pickings, depending on the degree of ripeness, these are all vinified and bottled separately. It is not unusual to have five or six different Auslese wines in a single vintage. Trockenbeerenauslese wines are produced in suitable vintages. The very best wines of the house are identified by a long golden capsule (older vintages carried the description „feinste Auslese“ on the label). The Riesling wines are counted among the best in the world, and achieve record prices on auction. Half of the Le Galais property in Wiltingen was acquired in 1954, while the other half was leased. The famous Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard, which covers six hectares, is owned exclusively by the family (monopole). These wines are vinified and matured in the Scharzhof cellars, but are marketed separately. The Egon Müller-Scharzhof estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitäts-Weingüter) association, as well as of PFV (Primum Familiae Vini).
