The estate is located in the village of Burg Layen-Rümmelsheim in the Nahe wine-growing region in Germany. The origins of the „Burg Leyen“ (original spelling of name) castle date back to the 11th century. It was built on the ridge of a hill in the Trollbachtal valley on the banks of the lower Nahe river, shortly before it flows into the Rhine. In the course of time, three castle buildings were erected in the area, with different aristocratic owners, and with extensive holdings of vineyards and agricultural land. The Schlossgut (castle estate) in its present form was purchased by Johann Peter Diel (1750-1811) in 1802, after the family had already leased the land for several decades. Today the estate is run by Armin Diel, the cellar master is Christoph J. Friedrich. Armin Diel has built up a reputation as gastronomic and wine journalist since the early 1980’s, and is a member of numerous national and international tasting panels. He has moderated gastronomic TV series, written accompanying books and accompanied culinary wine tours. Together with his partner Joel B. Payne he edits and publishes the German version of the Gault Millau wine guide. He has received countless awards for his efforts in promoting German wine. The vineyard area totals 17 hectares, all located in the commune of Dorsheim, with holdings in the top-rated Burgberg, Goldloch and Pittermännchen sites. The area is planted with Riesling (10,6 ha), Pinot Gris (2,4 ha), Pinot Noir (1,9 ha), Pinot Blanc (1,8 ha), Chardonnay (0,2 ha), Dornfelder (0,1 ha) and Pinot Madeleine (0,1 ha). Only the Reisling wines are labelled with their respective vineyard sites. In addition, bottle-fermented (and hand-riddled) sparkling wines are produced in accordance with the methóde champenoise. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikats- u. Qualitäts-Weingüter) association, and is a founder member of the Deutsches Barrique-Forum association.
