The Kraichgau sub-region, which includes a number of important wine-producing communes, is located between Heidelberg and Karlsruhe. Here, there is no homogeneous carpet of vineyards, rather they are dotted about as islands spread over the hilly countryside. Here the wines are lighter, and have less extract and body than in more southerly locations, but occasionally in recent years the vineyards in the warmest section of the Kraichgau have brought forward some really big red wines.
