| The estate is located in the town of Rüdesheim in the Rheingau wine-growing region in Germany. It was established in 1880 by Bernhard Scholl and Albert Hillebrand as part of a wine shop. It was taken over by Peter Breuer in the early 20th century, and was further expanded by his son Georg. Thereafter, the third generation took over, in the shape of the brothers Bernhard and Heinrich Breuer. A special barrique cellar for Pinot Noir wines was commissioned in 1999. Together with Bernd Philippi (owner of the Koehler-Ruprecht estate in the Pfalz region) and Werner Näkel (owner of the Meyer-Näkel estate in the Ahr region), with whom Bernhard Breuer had previously already co-operated on other projects, he founded the „Quinta da Carvalhosa” estate in the Duoro valley in Portugal in 2000. In 1997 the joint venture estate Mont du Toit was founded in South Africa, together with Bernd Philippi and the South African Stephan du Toit.
Bernhard Breuer, who died unexpectedly in 2004, was consided to be one of the most innovative German winemakers, who paid particular attention ot the production of dry Riesling wines. He founded the Riesling association Chart Rheingau in 1984, this was then merged with the VDP Rheingau in 1999. Sustainable vineyard practices, including seasonal cover crops, are implemented. The vineyard area totals 32 hectares, located in two communes: Rauenthal (Nonnenberg monopole holding, Rothenberg) and Rüdesheim (Berg Roseneck, Berg Rottland, Berg Schlossberg). The dominant variety is Riesling, with 26 hectares, followed by Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. The virtually extinct but historically important Weißer Heunisch as well as Orleans vines have also been planted. Since the 2002 vintage (with the exception of 2006), some 200 to 300 bottless of Orleans have been produced annually, the maiden vintage for the Heunisch, which was planted in 2005, is the 2008.
The aim to produce high quality is underlined by the extremely low yields (25 to 45 hl/ha) and extremely strict selection of grapes. Only the very best wines are marketed with a single vineyard designation. The second-tier wines are known as „Terra Montosa”, followed by the „town Rieslings” (Estates) and the „Estate Rieslings” (in the variants „Sauvage” = dry and „Charm” = off-dry). A speciality are small quantities of wines made from particularly old Pnot Gris and Pinot Noir vines. These have been bottled since 1999 und the additional designation ”B (Bergterrassen= hillside terraces). In addition, sweet botrytis dessert wines such as Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese are produced, with grapes being sorted manually according to the degree of botrytis infestation. In addition, bottle-fermented sparkling wine as well as brandies and grappa-style spirits are also produced. The estate is a member of the Deutsches Barrique-Forum association. | This was a difficult vintage, and this is reflected particularly in the basic wines filled in litre bottles, and in the noble sweet wines presented by Bernhard Breuer. In spite of this, his Auslese Goldkapsel has a creamy texture, spice and caramel notes, and is an excellent dessert wine. The range of dry Rieslings, in terms of its consistency as well as in terms of the sheer quality of the top wines, stands head and shoulders above anything else produced in the Rheingau this year. Certainly, across all the quality levels in the range, the wines do not quite match up to their exceptional predecessors. However, even the Estate Rieslings, which have very pure fruit and very elegant mineral notes, are most enjoyable. At least one step above this is the Terra Montosa, a blend of wines from the top vineyard sites, but considered by Breuer to be not good enough for inclusion in the single vineyard wines. There can be no doubt that this firmly structured and perfectly balanced Riesling certainly has class. At the top of the range are no less than four exceptional single vineyard Rieslings. All of these deserve inclusion in the Top Ten ranking for the vintage. Yet again it is the Schlossberg site that is currently most closed, and reveals least of its quality, but certainly has considerably concentration and body. The Nonnenberg site certainly suffered most under the adverse weather conditions. This is not really reflected in the wine. The style is quite lean, piquant and with a structure reminiscent of a tightly drawn steel wire most impressive. The battle for first position is being waged between the incredibly lively Berg Roseneck and the Berg Rottland, which combines considerable elegance with lots of power and a dense structure. Both show a purity and depth of fruit that is just about unique for the 2000 vintage. Even in really good vintages, only a handful of producers in Germany is capable of producing wines of this quality, and 2000 was anything but a good vintage. A huge compliment on this achievement! |

The vintage 1999 |
| Bernhard Breuer and his cellar-master Hermann Schmoranz have presented a range this year that can hardly be surpassed in terms of consistency and brilliance. Even the most basic wine, the Gutsriesling "Sauvage"; is simply very good, and would have no problem passing as a dry Spätlese, which it is, de facto. The Rüdesheim Estate is even more juicy, but is perhaps lacking just that little bit of finesse that would place it firmly in the first league. All the other wines have real class, and some of them are really great wines. At the top of the range is a round dozen of wines, all rated at 90 points or higher. This documents an achievement that can be equalled by only a handful of winemakers in the world. It is remarkable that the wines produced from the Rüdesheimer Schlossberg are all considerably more closed at this stage than the remainder of the range. I believe that these wines can probably improve over the next few years, and a rating at that stage might result in even higher points being achieved. |
