Geisenheim, which is located in the Rheingau wine-growing area in the federal state of Hessen in Germany, is also the home of the „Forschungsanstalt für Weinbau, Gartenbau, Getränke-Techologie und Landespflege” (research institute for vitigulture, horticulture, beverage technology and environmental care), which was founded in 1872 as the „Königliche Lehranstalt für Obst- und Weinbau” (royal teaching institute for viticulture and fruit farming). Today, the complex includes five institutes with a total of 14 faculties; together with the Wiesbaden technical college/university, students are taken through courses for viticulture and oenology, and beverage technology, culminating in an engineering diploma. The research and training here are held in high regard internationally. Geisenheim graduates are employed in many different functions in the wine field all over the world. In addition, the Geisenheim research institute, in conjunction with the university of Giessen provides a preparatory course that leads up to the academic degree of a diploma in oenology. This is the only academic training course in this field in the whole German-speaking area. The institute also cooperates with the well-known educational institution Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET). Great attention is also paid to the cultivation of new grape varieties at Geisenheim. This has a very long tradition, with Dr. Hermann Müller-Thurgau (1850-1927) was active at the institute from 1867 to 1890, and laid the groundwork here for the famous grape variety named after him. Later, the institute was run by Professor Dr. Heinrich Birk (1898-1973), he concentrated his efforts on developing early-ripening Riesling. Professor Dr. Helmut Becker (1927-1989) was the dean here from 1964 to 1989, and particularly encouraged the development of new European varieties, with the aim of ensuring reliable yields, increasing the resistance to fungal infections (botrytis, mildew), while providing high wine quality and an affinity for oak maturation. Grape varieties developed along these lines are Arnsburger, Ehrenbreitsteiner, Ehrenfelser, Dunkelfelder, Gutenborner, Hibernal, Müller-Thurgau, Osteiner, Primera, Prinzipal, Reichensteiner, Rotberger, Saphira and Schönburger. A special feature is that Geisenheim uses genetic material of the Asian species vitis amurensis for its programmes (also see under Rondo). See also under BDO and Wine Event Geisenheim.
