Baden

The vineyards on the shores of Lake Constance (the Bodensee) are located at high altitudes, providing an exceptionally cool climate for the vines, compared with the rest of Baden. The wines, which are generally produced along the northern border of the lake are thus somewhat lighter in body than those from other sub-regions. Apart from very good Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris wines, the Lake Constance area also produces surprisingly good, elegant Pinot Noirs. Currently the leading producer by far is the Aufricht estate in Meersburg, producing some excellent white and red wines from Burgundian varieties, as well as a reliably good Sauvignon Blanc.
