Appellation named after the commune of the same name located in the Côte de Beaune (Côte d´Or) in Burgundy in France. The vineyard area totals 313 hectares. It lies next to the commune of Volnay. The Cistercian monks had vineyards here in the 12th century. Clergyman Claude Arnoux (1695-1770) described the wine in his famous book. Almost exclusively only red wines are produced from Pinot Noir (with the permitted addition of small amounts of Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault. One of the reasons frequently quoted for the popularity of this wine, which is one of the best-known in Burgundy, is that the name is so easy to pronounce. However, they are also indisputably among the best wines. There are around 30 Premiers Crus with a total vineyard area of 128 hectares. Among the best sites are: Chanlins, Épenots, Fremiers, Jarolières, Pézerolles and especially (actually of Grand Cru quality) Rugiens. The best-known producers are Bichot (Domaine du Pavillon), Billard-Gonett, Boillot, Château Pommard, Comte Armand, Hospices de Beaune, Lejeune, Domaine Leroy, Machard de Gramont, Montille and Pothier-Rieusset.
