Appellation named after the town of the same name, located in the Côte de Nuits section of the Côte d´Or in Burgundy in France, it also includes vineyards in the commune of Prémeaux-Prissey. The total vineyard area is around 300 hectares. There is documented evidence that king Louis XIV. (1638-1715) was prescribed a mature red wine from Nuits-Saint-Georges by his personal physician, Guy-Crescent Fagon. The town is the second most important wine centre in Burgundy, after Beaune. As with the Hospices de Beaune, there is also an annual charity wine auction held here each year in March, known as the „Hospices de Nuits“. The administrative headqaurters of the famous wine brotherhood Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin is located here. Almost the entire production is of red wines, made from Pinot Noir, although the addition of small portions of Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault is also permitted. The small amount of white wines is made from Chardonnay, with the permitted addition of Pinot Blanc. There are no Grand Cru sites. There are 40 Premiers Crus, with a total vineyard area of 143 hectares, the most important of these are Argillières, de l´Arlot, Boudots, Corvées, Cailles, Damodés, Forêts, Maréchale, Murgers, Perdrix, Perrières, Porrets, Portes, Procès, Saint-Georges (reputedly in existence since 1000 AD) and Vaucrains.
